Martin is the older brother of Michael "Mike" Kupfner. Both played in the 1990s with the friendly Hansi Schweweberer in the trio under the name Gerlosstein Echo . After the dissolution of the group in 2000, they founded the ZIM together with Josef Wechselberger, whose band Zillertal Express had also disbanded in 2000  , and Herbert Kröll.

The band had since 2001 at least until their dissolution appearances in German-speaking countries and abroad.

In 2008, ZIM broke up. In the eight years of existence six albums were recorded.  In addition, the quartet delivered several contributions to national music samplers .  In addition to the Zillertal aprons , the origin Buam , the young Zillertalers and the Zillertal rags , the group was among the well- known musical representatives of their Zillertal home.

Martin Kupfner has been on tour with Willi Pfister from the Zillertal night owls in the duo since 2009, with his youngest brother Andreas Kupfner as Zillertaler Briada duo and ZiM Martin, the Zillertal musician .  Josef Wechselberger and Herbert Kröll are playing together with Stefan Schiestl as trio Die drei Zillertaler (Z3).
