Alabama is an American country, Southern rock and bluegrass band formed in Fort Payne, Alabama in 1969. The band was founded by Randy Owen (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) and his cousin Teddy Gentry (bass guitar, background vocals). They were soon joined by their other cousin, Jeff Cook (lead guitar, fiddle, and keyboards). First operating under the name Wildcountry, the group toured the Southeast bar circuit in the early 1970s, and began writing original songs. They changed their name to Alabama in 1977 and following the chart success of two singles, were approached by RCA Records for a record deal.

Alabama's biggest success came in the 1980s, where the band had over 27 number one hits, seven multi-platinum albums and received numerous awards. Alabama's first single on RCA Records, "Tennessee River", began a streak of 21 number one singles, including "Love in the First Degree" (1981), "Mountain Music" (1982), "Dixieland Delight" (1983), "If You're Gonna Play in Texas (You Gotta Have a Fiddle in the Band)" (1984) and "Song of the South" (1987). The band's popularity waned slightly in the 1990s although they continued to produce hit singles and multi-platinum album sales. Alabama disbanded in 2006 following a farewell tour and two albums of inspirational music but reunited in 2010 and have continued to record and tour worldwide.

The band's blend of traditional country music and Southern rock combined with elements of gospel, and pop music gave it a crossover appeal that helped lead to their success. They also toured extensively and incorporated production elements such as lighting and "sets" inspired by rock concerts into their shows. The band has over 30 number one country records on the Billboard charts to their credit and have sold over 75 million records, making them one of the world's best-selling bands of all time.  AllMusic credited the band with popularizing the idea of a country band and wrote that "It's unlikely that any other country group will be able to surpass the success of Alabama."

It was released in September 1992 as the second single from their album American Pride. The song hit number one on both the US Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and the Canadian RPM Country Tracks chart.

"Love in the First Degree" is a song written by Jim Hurt and Tim DuBois, and recorded by American country music band Alabama. It was released in October 1981 as the third single from the band's album Feels So Right. It became the group's fifth straight No. 1 single (and second multi-week No. 1) on the Billboard magazine Hot Country Singles chart.

"Love in the First Degree" became Alabama's biggest crossover hit, peaking at No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1982.

As with the previous single, "Feels So Right," the song's pop "love ballad" style — along with the country rock style of its other songs — became the cornerstone of Alabama's sound throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Today, "Love in the First Degree" remains one of Alabama's most popular songs.

"High Cotton" is a song written by Scott Anders and Roger Murrah, and recorded by American country music group Alabama.

It was released in July 1989 as the third single from the album Southern Star. The song was one of four singles on the album to reach number one on the Hot Country Singles chart.

The song is a reminiscence of the youth of the narrator, who explains how his younger days were so good, and how he didn't realize how the times would change. "We didn't know that times were lean / Around our house the grass was green / It didn't seem like things were all that bad."

The song references some the morals and customs characteristic of religious farming families, especially during the olden days, such as taking Sunday as a strict day of rest, whether or not there was work that could be done.

The whole fourth stanza of the song references this "When Sunday mornings rolled around / We dressed up in hand-me-downs / Just in time, to gather with the church / Sometimes I think how long it's been / And how it impressed me then / It was the only day my daddy wouldn't work." It also glorifies a generally simple lifestyle of hard work. "I bet we walked a thousand miles / Choppin' cotton and pushin' plows / And learnin' how to give it all we had."

"Born Country" is a song written by Byron Hill and John Schweers, and recorded by the American country music band Alabama. It was released in December 1991 as the second and final single on their compilation album, Greatest Hits Vol. II. It reached No. 1 on the Radio & Records chart in March 1992, also peaking at number 2 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts.

The single was one of three new tracks on Alabama's Greatest Hits Vol. II album (the other two being "Then Again" and "Hats Off") and was released in 1992 by RCA Records. The song won an ASCAP Award for being among the most performed country songs of 1992.

"Feels So Right" is a song written by Randy Owen, and recorded by American country music band Alabama. It was released in May 1981 as the second single and title track from the band's album Feels So Right . It was the group's fourth straight No. 1 single (and first multi-week No. 1) on the Billboard magazine Hot Country Singles chart.

"Feel So Right" was covered by Clay Walker as a duet with Randy Owen on his 2010 album She Won't Be Lonely Long.

A mellow love song with sensuous and somewhat explicit lyrics and a strong country pop styling, "Feels So Right" was also Alabama's first crossover hit, performing modestly well on CHR and Top 40 radio stations. The song peaked at No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the summer of 1981, and became their first of five top 10 hits on the adult contemporary chart. On the country chart, the song has the distinction of becoming the first No. 1 song to drop directly out of the top 40 since the inception of the 100-position chart,  falling to No. 43 for the chart week of August 1, 1981.

"If I Had You" is a song written by Kerry Chater and Danny Mayo, and recorded by American country music group Alabama. It was released in February 1989 as the second single from the album Southern Star. "If I Had You" was Alabama's twenty-fifth number one on the country chart. The single went number one for one week and spent thirteen weeks on the country chart.[1]

The song was covered by Andy Williams on his 1991 album Nashville and Eddy Arnold on his 1993 album Last of the Love Song Singers: Then and Now.

"The Closer You Get" is a song recorded by American country music band Alabama. It was released in April 1983 as the title track and second single from Alabama's album The Closer You Get....

"The Closer You Get" was written in 1980 by J.P. Pennington and Mark Gray, members of Exile. However, the song was not immediately recorded by Alabama. Two earlier versions were released as singles - the first by Exile (which failed to gain much attention) and singer Don King, whose version reached No. 27 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in October 1981. In addition, Rita Coolidge recorded the song for her 1981 album, Heartbreak Radio, and released her version as a single.

Alabama's version differed substantially from King's acoustic version. According to country music writer Tom Roland, the song featured "distorted guitars, a more elaborate arrangement and an altered vocal sound."

The end result was Alabama's 10th No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. In addition, "The Closer You Get" registered enough airplay on Top 40 radio stations to peak at No. 38 on the Billboard Hot 100.

A music video was filmed for the song, and has aired on CMT and Great American Country.
