The J. Geils Band /ˌdʒeɪ ˈɡaɪlz/ was an American rock band formed in 1968 in Worcester, Massachusetts, under the leadership of guitarist John "J." Geils. The band played R&B-influenced blues rock during the 1970s and soon achieved commercial success before moving towards a more new wave mainstream sound in the early 1980s, which would soon bring the band to its commercial peak. Since its initial break-up in 1985, the band has reunited several times.

The band first released several Top 40 singles in the early 1970s, including a cover of the song "Lookin' for a Love" by The Valentinos (which reached #39 in the Billboard Top 100 in 1971), as well as the single "Give It to Me" (which reached #30 in 1973). Their biggest hits included "Must of Got Lost" (which reached #12 in the Billboard Top 100 in 1975), "Love Stinks" (which reached #38 in 1980 and was featured in several films), "Freeze-Frame" (which reached #4 in the Billboard Top 200 in 1981), and "Centerfold" (which charted to No. 1 in the United States in early 1982).

The band started as an acoustic blues trio in the mid 1960s, with guitarist John Geils, bassist Danny Klein (Dr. Funk) and harmonica player Richard Salwitz (stage name Magic Dick). The band formed under the name Snoopy and the Sopwith Camels while Geils was attending Worcester Polytechnic Institute for a couple of semesters.

In 1968, the band switched focus, starting to play electric guitar and bass and recruiting two fellow musicians from a local Boston, MA band called The Hallucinations, who were a frequent performing band at the Boston venue Boston Tea Party on 53 Berkeley Street in Boston, MA, drummer Stephen Bladd and his fellow bandmate, (who was the fast-talking former WBCN disc jockey) singer Peter Wolf, born Peter Blankenfeld (originally from the Bronx, NY). They became the J. Geils Blues Band, later dropping the word "Blues" from the band name. The same year, former fan Seth Justman joined on keyboards, and the band started to earn a sizable local following in the Boston area. The group signed to Atlantic Records in 1970.

"Centerfold" is a single released by The J. Geils Band from their album Freeze Frame. The song is about a man who is shocked to discover that his high school crush appeared in a centerfold spread for a men's magazine. The singer cannot decide between his disappointment due to her loss of innocence, or his lust.

It was released in autumn 1981, and eventually went to Number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in February 1982, and stayed there for six weeks. It was the first single released from the album Freeze Frame and was an early staple on MTV.

In February 1982, after the song hit #1 in the US, "Centerfold" peaked at number three in the UK Top 40, earning The J. Geils Band their only major hit single in the UK, although follow-up "Freeze-Frame" was a minor hit.

The song lists at #52 on Billboard's All Time Top Songs.

"Freeze-Frame" is a song written by Seth Justman and Peter Wolf for The J. Geils Band. It was first released as the opening track on the chart-topping 1981 album of the same name. The song was released on a 45 in early 1982 as the second single from the album, following the million-selling US #1/UK #3 hit "Centerfold". The single's flip side, "Flamethrower," received airplay on urban contemporary radio stations throughout the United States, and reached #20 on the Billboard Soul Chart.

"Centerfold" had landed the band at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for 6 weeks in early 1982 and would ultimately give them a UK Top 3 hit almost a year later. "Freeze-Frame" was chosen as the second single and at the peak of the band's popularity, became the second consecutive million-selling Gold-certified hit from the album, ultimately peaking at #4 on the Hot 100 on April 10, 1982 and remained in that position for 4 weeks, after entering the charts in mid-February. The single also reached #27 in the UK chart.

"Centerfold" and "Freeze-Frame" are among a total of ten singles by The J. Geils Band to reach the Billboard Top 40.

In 2011, a remixed version of Freeze-Frame was used for the Energizer Ultimate Lithium battery ad campaign.
